My favorite way to truly experience a region's food culture is to visit their open air markets. While in Portland, OR - I had an opportunity to do just that. Unfortunately the market is not dog friendly and I had my family traveling with me, including our pets. So while my husband sat in the park outside of the market boundaries, I quickly buzzed through in search of breakfast. I ended up with a gorgeous green olive levain style bread, a chive fromage blanc, maple smoked salmon and golden raspberries, while my children stood in the long line for the savory crepes. And I snapped a few pictures along the way of the incredible produce. If you ever make your way to Portland, be sure to add this beautiful market to your list of stops!
All food vendors serve their food on real dishes and with real silverware. When finished, diners return the dishes to their designated bin of soapy water. A terrific way to reduce waste. As you can see only two bags collected at this spot and the market is in its 3rd hour.
