One of my loveliest pleasures in life is strolling in an open air market. Smelling the fresh produce, and food stands, hearing the vendors call out to passerby's and selecting the treasures to take home and enjoy with my family. No matter what city I am in, I will seek out the farmers market. That's where I can really see the terroir of a place. Where the food growers and makers meet with the people in a street.
I recently had the pleasure to do just that at the Amsterdam Noordermarkt in the Jordaan neighborhood. I rode my bike up to the market, excited to meet up with my friend Marieke Verdenius, the founder of Simply Slow and an editor at Jamie Magazine Netherlands. When I arrived, the sky opened up and the rain poured down. So we waited out the rain and enjoyed coffee and dutch apple pie at the famous Winkel café. After the rain let up, Marieke gave me a quick tour of the market where I enjoyed the sights and sounds that make each market unique and imparts a sense memory for me.
